Sunrays: An Interactive Space Divider Inspired by Chinese Culture

Reimagining the Golden Leaf and Chinese Folding Screens

The Sunrays design by Juju Wang brings together two important elements of Chinese culture, the golden leaf and the Chinese folding screen, in a contemporary and interactive way. By presenting the golden leaf as a standalone entity, this installation pays homage to history while creating a playful and mesmerizing environment.

The Sunrays design draws inspiration from the rich cultural heritage of China. The golden leaf, traditionally used as a finishing surface, is elevated to the main focus of the interactive space divider. The installation aims to reflect the lightness and delicacy of the golden leaf, portraying it as if it is floating in the air.

The screen itself is designed to highlight the dynamics and lightness of the golden leaf. Transparent panels, when rotated, create a rain of small golden leaf particles that slowly fall down, adding a touch of magic to the space. The result is a captivating and immersive experience for the viewer.

The technology behind the Sunrays design is a combination of metallic structures and rotating glass panels. The glass panels contain an oil solution with floating golden leaf paper inside, allowing for the mesmerizing effect when rotated. Each panel measures 540 x 1875 mm and contains six blocks of floating golden leaf, each measuring 480 x 300 mm. The complete screen consists of six panels, measuring 3240 x 1857 mm.

By reinterpreting the golden leaf and the Chinese folding screen, Juju Wang has created a unique and captivating design that showcases the beauty and cultural significance of these elements. The Sunrays design serves as a reminder of the rich history and craftsmanship that China has to offer.

The Sunrays design was created in Shanghai, China in 2018. It is a result of extensive research into Chinese screens and the golden leaf. The goal of the project was to bring these two elements together and introduce them to a wider audience, allowing them to appreciate and engage with Chinese culture in a new and interactive way.

The biggest technical challenge in the creation of the Sunrays design was finding the right balance and speed for the golden leaf to float in the air. The panels needed to unleash a surreal experience for the user, creating a sense of wonder and enchantment.

Juju Wang holds the copyrights for the Sunrays design, which was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2020. This prestigious award recognizes designs that demonstrate outstanding creativity and resourcefulness, incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology. The Sunrays design contributes to improving the quality of life and making the world a better place.
